Vernon God Little

Vernon God Little
by DBC Pierre

Vernon God Little was ‘fucken’ awesome.

I particularly enjoyed the last few pages, where Vernon talks to Lasalle.

The pair discuss ‘the secret’, which is that we are all ultimately our own God – we are responsible for ourselves.

Gorgeous book, beautiful language.

Vernon’s character is sympathetic because he sees the degradation and injustice in the world around him, and becomes a victim of it. He is helpless. He is made passive by events, unlike Jesus (his friend) who took the opposite path.

Vernon has to be told that he’s not helpless by Lasalle.

Lasalle talks of people’s wants and needs, and how you just need to know what they are (his example was scratching a lighter which caused his fellow inmate to light a cigarette).

Highly recommended.
