I stole a line from Terminator 2 for the title of this post because it’s apt – I’m writing about the future. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. But the truth is that no amount of thinking can change what’s going to come. Only action can do that – and even then only to a degree. I really don’t know where my life is headed, or in which direction fate will take me.
I guess I should remember another part from that Terminator 2 quote:
“There’s no fate but what we make for ourselves.”
That’s true in so far as I can control myself. I can’t stop an asteroid hitting the earth, or prevent a catastrophic accident, or catching an illness. The only thing I can control is me. How I choose to live. How I choose to respond to events, good or bad. In that sense the above quotation is true.
Yes, randomness will carve great gouges out of our plans. But we are not helpless or hopeless.
The future’s not set.
