Duotrope – A Writer’s Market Treasure Trove

One of the greatest problems I faced, as a writer, was that of finding appropriate markets for my work. You see, quite often the work I produce is of mixed genres, and is not easily placed. Finding that e-zine, website or plain ol’ magazine publisher wasn’t easy. It’s still not easy. But I have found a great place on the net to help me. It’s called Duotrope. Duotrope is a writing markets website, with some great features and a pretty good set of writerly data. It’s been a huge help to me. Through Duotrope I’ve discovered loads of excellent little sites, and new avenues to publication. I recommend the hell out of it! Here’s a snippet from their site: What We AreDuotrope’s Digest is a free resource for writers that primarily offers an extensive, searchable database of current fiction and poetry markets. We also offer a calendar of upcoming deadlines, submissions trackers (for registered users), and some nifty reports compiled from the data we’ve accumulated. It is, as far as I can tell, a voluntarily run set-up, that needs regular donations from its users. So, head on over to Duotrope, have a look around, and if you like what you see, consider donating. Let’s face it, we all need a little help...

Logos & Snooker

Today I have been mostly… incorporating new logos into my workplace’s stationery and other paraphernalia. I wish I could say it was interesting. The designing of the logo part was great, but the slotting of said logo into various documents is boring. Tonight I’m gonna have a proper play with Ronnie O’Sullivan’s Snooker – an iPhone app I’m going to review for 148apps.com. Looks good so far. Controls a little fiddly though. Anyhoo, we’ll see. Look out for the review some time...

On/Off To Be Published

A week or so ago I got an e-mail telling me a piece of Flash Fiction I’d submitted to Every Day Fiction had been accepted for publication. The piece is called On/Off. I’m not sure when it’ll appear on the site, but I’ll be informed – and paid – nearer the time. Go...

Spam

Isn’t spam great? The thought and effort put into them is sometimes staggering. Take this one, for instance:  Subject: coaches   causespittle 11b799f That is simply brilliant. The subtle nuances in wordplay, the stirring descriptions, the emotion. I can barely resist the urge to click on the heavily disguised link to...

Let There Be Light!

Human ingenuity is amazing. When necessity dictates, a solution can be found. OK, so the light emitting bottles may look a bit odd, but they certainly work. Although, I do wonder how well they would work in Britain on a dull, grey, miserable...

1990

Wow. I’ve spent part of last night going through a diary I started (note: started – I rarely finished a diary) in 1990. It’s incredible to re-read and re-discover how much of an idiot I was then. The things I cared about, the things I talked with my peers about and, more importantly, the way we talked about them, was ridiculously laughable. In fact I did laugh out loud. Several times. So did my wife, who put up with listening to a few entries before breaking down into a fit of laughter which brought her to her knees. Man, was I confused and fucked up in those days....

Storm

Here’s a video by an artist I’ve just this minute discovered, named Tim Minchin. It’s a beat poem that delves into the bullshit that is alternative medicine and such-like. Given my atheism and general lack of belief in fairies I found it clever and effective. Plus, it’s damn...

This Is The Year

This is the year I do instead of think. This is the year I start working for what I want. It probably won’t be easy, but by the will of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, I’ll start walking. A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. Come to think of it, so does any length of journey. So here goes (here’s where you imagine me taking that first step. I’m wearing black slip-on shoes if that helps). So, what do I want? Well, I’m still thinking on that one – but to start with I want to write more. I’m gonna dust off and rewrite some old things, compose new stories and articles and I’m gonna do the number one thing I should have been doing all along – send them out the front door! People have gotta see them before they can say anything at all about them. You can’t get published if you don’t send it out. You don’t get the girl unless you frickin’ ask her out! So, that’s the start. My writing asking publishers out for a date. Symbolically, of...
